This article highlights the benefits and psychological risks from performing CPR. It is a good article that explores some of the issues following a resuscitation. Whilst CPR can provide a sense of satisfaction for some, for others it can deeply affect them psychologically. At HS First Aid we proactively offer support for all of our students after our courses. As two paramedics, we have undertaken many resuscitations, both successful and unsuccessful and understand the difficulties faces by our first aiders. We remind first aiders that they have their fellow first aiders to contact for support and we provide them with our details to discuss any questions they may have.

Register your local defibrillator

For the first time ever, each of the 14 ambulance services across the UK have joined The Circuit to share the locations of defibrillators across the UK. However, at the moment, many defibrillators never get used because emergency services don’t know where they are or how to access them.

The Circuit – the national defibrillator network provides a national overview of where defibrillators can be found and for the first time brings this information together in one database. As defibrillators are registered on The Circuit, their location and status is instantly synchronised with the emergency services’ systems ensuring that their information is always up to date and ready to help save lives. This has enable The Circuit to map 50,000 defibrillators. Impressive, but this only represents around half of the estimated 100,000 defibrillators in the UK.

The Circuit is the key to making sure that whenever and wherever a cardiac arrest happens, the people on the scene can get to the nearest working defibrillator quickly. Whether it’s in a local pub, shopping centre or office - every defibrillator matters.

To improve survival rates, the Resuscitation Council UK, along with the British Heart Foundation (BHF), St John Ambulance and Association of Ambulance Chief Executives (AACE) are calling on anyone who looks after defibrillators in places such as offices, communities, shopping centres, leisure centres, and in public places, to ensure your device is registered on The Circuit.

So, make your New Years resolution an easy one. If you have a public access defibrillator on your building, in your workplace make sure it is registered on The Circuit. Registration could be the difference between life and death.

RCUK launch QR code for CPR

RCUK are excited to have launched an innovative new CPQR campaign to give people their best chance of survival in a sudden cardiac arrest. This heart holds lifesaving information. It's a QR code that could save lives; scan the code, watch the video , and read the simple steps to save a life. With 80% of cardiac arrests happening at home, Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK) is on a mission to give everyone across the UK the CPR skills to save a life. They have created the “CPQR code” a heart shaped QR code that directs people to a short video on how to do CPR. Like the pink Ribbon, or the Remembrance Poppy, the CPQR code is an icon that can be used by anyone and everyone who wants to raise awareness for the importance of learning CPR. It’s an emblem with a twist: its design holds the information needed to learn and save a life. Scan it. Learn it. Save a life
